What is duct cleaning?
Duct cleaning is the process by which
specialized tools are used to access the deep recesses of your
ventilation system. These tools, combining the use of special
brushes in conjunction with a powerful vacuum, are inserted into
the vents to dislodge and remove dust, debris and contaminants
lodged in the system.
Why should ducts be cleaned?
Every heating/air conditioning system is
designed to circulate air in the home.
One end acts as a soft vacuum, slowly but surely
sucking dust, debris, pet hair, smoke and more into the system.
Over weeks, months and years, these contaminants start adhering to
the inside of the duct, increasing the accumulation of undesirable
pollutants.
The other end of your system acts like a
“nozzle”, taking those contaminants that did not become lodged in
the ducting system and re-distributing through the air their
undesirable results around your home for your family to breath in.
If the ducts have never been cleaned, there is
years of build up from dust, dirt, pet hair, and the most common
thing, construction debris. In some cases, soda cans and bottles,
cigarette packages, baby shoes, and yes, even magazines have also
been found in floor vents. If someone suffers from allergies
and/or asthma, this is the most crucial thing that can be done to
help clean the air in your home. It's all about removing the
irritants in the air. To do that, you must go to the source inside
the ducting itself.
Deciding whether or not to have
your air ducts cleaned?
This decision goes hand in hand with the "Why
should ducts be cleaned" question. All of the reasons given above
plus many others, is why you should clean the vents. I can almost
see your eyebrows go up when I say, “many others”.
Ask yourself, “Have your floors ever been
re-finished? Has the carpet ever been pulled and replaced? Has
there ever been water or smoke damage? Were there pets in the
home? What is a favorite place for a pet to mark?” Cats usually
“conduct business” along the baseboards, and of course, the vents
are usually right there along the baseboards. “Has the furnace
ever been cleaned or serviced, especially if it is old?”
Are you getting my point? Everything from the
air handler in the furnace and air conditioning system, goes into,
through and out of the vents. That is what you are breathing.
What to expect from our
service?
Remember our promise on our very first page?
Ethics and old fashioned values is our mantra. Simply, we will do
the best job for our customers within their budget.
There are two schools of thought among duct
cleaners.
- Some feel that duct cleaning is an "all or
nothing process". These are the groups that invariably charge
between $400 and $1,000. If the ventilation system has never
been cleaned or you fall into any of the categories listed
above, it is certainly a good thing to clean the whole
ventilation system. These same groups would have you believe
that if you don't get the whole thing done, you are wasting your
money. They insist that any service provider that would only do
parts of the system must be some kind of "rip off" company.
That simply is not true.
- The other school of thought is that any
cleaning is good, and it is certainly better than no cleaning at
all.
Certified-DFW has
over 30 years of industry experience
and are IICRC master certified. When we say that any cleaning is
better than no cleaning, we stake our reputation on it.
If some parts of the system are new, or if the
customer simply wants certain parts of the system done, that
decision is up to the customer. Our responsibility is to provide
the best information on their systems, then let the customer
decide what is best for them and their budget.
Please understand, some jobs can be between $400
and $1,000, but, it that pricing shouldn't be the only option
available. Some jobs can be as little as $100 and $200.
One added word
of caution...
Be wary of anyone who promises that they will clean your
whole system for $49.95, or any low, fixed price. Invariably,
there will always be “other” hidden costs.
Bottom line, the customer should meet and
discuss with the service provider what they want. This is where
you must decide on who has the ethics and old fashioned integrity
- the group you can trust your families health to. The “most
reasonable price” should be a secondary consideration.
